SPANISH GT CHAMPIONSHIP 2006

1º. ROUND JARAMA

NEWS 2006

1. JARAMA. First raceFirst

46 cars in the best ever start

Everything is ready for the racing weekend in the Jarama

The two races will be broadcasted in Teledeporte

Again this year the Jarama circuit will host a very important appointment of the Spanish Motorsport. The season has already started, but until the race weekend in the Madrid circuit... it seems that something is missing. Well, the day arrived, the races will start and they will do it in the most spectacular way ever.

The Spanish GT will have an amazing start. The astonishing amount of 46 cars has already confirmed its entry for the Jarama round, a deluxe grid that has surpassed all expectations, both in quantity and quality of teams and drivers. This first round will also count for the Trofeo Ibérico EDP/HC Energía

GTA

As always, the GTA class cars will be the stars of the series, and among them, the new Ferrari 430 GT2, the last jewel released by Maranello, will try to dominate the championship. Up to six units of this powerful car will be seen in Jarama. There could have been seven if it wasn’t for the unfortunate accident of Icer Brakes and Jesús Díez Villarroel’s 430 in the 1.000km of Spa.

Despite this absence, the GT national championship becomes the international championship with more units of this car. Play Team Sara Free, current champion of the series, were the first to use their unit in the International GT Open and will arrive to Jarama to start defending their title with Michele Bartyan and Alessandro Pier Guidi. RSV Motorsport, with Peter Sundberg and Domingo Romero, could also develop their 430 in the Open, as well as Roger Racing, which will be in the Madrid track with Santi Puig and Javi Díaz.

In contrast, it will be the first outing with the car for Manel Cerqueda and Luis Pérez Sala (Automóbil Club D’Andorra) and Portuguese Fernando Espiritu Santo and Ricardo Bravo (Racing for Portugal). The last 430 belongs to the Italian team GPC Sport, which will attend the first round of the national championship with Marco Lambertini and Gabriele Gardel, current FIA GT champion, who will make his debut in the series.

But the 430 is not the only car in the championship. Ferrari will also be represented by the 360 Modena, a car that could already put up a good fight, as shown in the France GT Open. Ni Amorim and Manuel Giao (Play Team Sara Free) and Pedro Bastos (GPC) will battle with those cars.

José Manuel Pérez Aicart and Lucas Guerrero (Escudería Bengala) will be again the main Spanish hope to recover a title that has travelled abroad the last two years. Their Mosler MT900R was extremely competitive at the start of the season and no doubt they will be very comfortable in the first round of the series. The Mosler assault is completed by Motor Competición (Villalba-Gutiérrez), MC Motorsport (Cutillas-Galiano) and V-Line, which will have Josep Mayola and Marc Carol, the Supercopa Seat León champion in 2004.

As per Seat, with the Cupra of RSV Motorsport (Ligonnet-Severin) and Sun Red (Valero-Saldaña and Vivancos-Vinyes), plus the Toledo of Fernández-Llobet, will still be the main outsiders of the championship.

Marcos Racing and the Porsche GT3 RSR of Drivex (De Castro-Burgueño), Racing for Portugal (Amaral-Couceiro) and Team Galp with the Mello Breyner brothers, will also be in the fight for victory.

GTB

The second category of the championship also presents an unusual equality, with an entry list more international than ever. Roger Racing will have two Ferrari 430 Challenge with Van Zoest-Santos, who have dominated their category in the International GT Open, and Terenas-Peres. The Spanish champion Kuru Villacieros, together with Francesc Robert, will have another unit of this competitive car of the Ferrari Challenge, which will also have some units of the old 360.

Its main rivals will be the fantastic Porsche 996 Cup of Jacques Medard, Santiago García or Sande and Castro Sport. The aggressive Marcos Mantis of Pedro Nevoa will also battle for the win in this class.

THE SPANISH GT CHAMPIONSHIP, STEP BY STEP

The Spanish GT Championship is composed by six rounds. The first will take place this weekend in the Jarama circuit. After that, the series will visit the circuits of Estoril (June 24-25), Albacete (September 2-3), Valencia (October 7-8), Jerez (October 21-22) and Cataluña (November 11-12).

The cars that can take part in the championship are the ones considered as GT by the International Federation, and also those which, although not homologated, comply with the regulations and are in the list of vehicles admitted in the technical regulations of the Championship.

The Spanish Championship is divided into three categories: GTA, GTB y GTC.

GTA: Are the vehicles homologated by the FIA as GT2, and those that comply with the FIA technical regulations but do not reach the minimum production quantity.

GTB: Are the vehicles homologated by the FIA as GT3, plus all the GT units that compete in single-mark Cups, Trophies and Challenges.

GTC: Are the GT vehicles with manufacturing date before 1998.

Each meeting is composed by two races. In one of them the racing distance will be less than 200 kilometres and will take approximately an hour. A change of driver is compulsory.

With the aim to keep the equality in the championship, at the end of each race, the first three drivers classified will have a compulsory handicap, in seconds, for the next meeting. So, the 1st. will have a 20 seconds handicap, the 2nd. will have 15 seconds and the 3rd, 10 seconds. This handicap will be effective during the change of driver in each race.

There is a general scratch classification, made with the results of each race, apart from and independent classification for each category of the championship.

.

FIRST RACE

Play Team wins the opening race

Play Team Sara Free achieved the victory in the first race of the Spanish GT championship. The Italian team, with Alejandro Pier Guidi and Michele Bartyan, kept from the beginning its privileged position in the grid.

They stayed in the lead even in the change of driver and the Ferrari 430 GT finished with more than fifteen seconds advantage over the second car of Peter Sundberg and Domingo Romero, also with a Ferrari, of the RSV Motorsport team.

The last podium position was for Drivex, with Miguel Ángel de Castro and Ángel Bargueño at the wheel of the Porsche GT3 RSR, who took advantage of the change of driver to pass the Mosler of Francesc Gutiérrez and Luis Villalba (Motor Competición).

Over at GTB, the win was for Daniel and César Rodrigo, with a Ferrari 430 Challenge. The Portuguese duo made the most of the drive-through penalty received by the Fernando Camino driver Francesc Robert for overtaking under yellow flag when he was leading. Second position in this class was for the Porsche 996 of Santiago García and Antonio Castro; while Robert and his team mate Kuru Villacieros had to settle with the third position.

Ángel Banús and Giorgio Vergara also got on to the podium as winners of the GTC class, at the wheel of a Ferrari 355.

Alessandro Pier Guidi: “It wasn’t an easy race, my main objective was to defend the first position from the beginning and I am happy with the result and the performance of the car in this first race”.

Michele Bartyan: “My part wasn’t difficult, but I had to keep up with the pressure of trying to stay focused to avoid any mistakes. Jarama is a very difficult circuit, but the public was amazing. It is a pleasure to race in Spain”.

SECOND RACE

Double victory for Play Team Sara Free

The Italian team Play Team Sara Free finished the first round of the Spanish GT Championship exactly as it finished the 2005 season: winning. Michele Bartyan and Alessandro Pier Guidi achieved today his second consecutive victory and are leaders of the Championship. And all that, despite the handicap of 20 seconds they received due to their first position in Saturday’s race.

The race was impressive and thrilled the more than 25.000 motorsport fans that attended the round in the Jarama circuit. The race had to start twice, as the first time a huge accident involving four cars forced the stewards to take out the red flag. The cars involved in the impact were the Ferrari 360 Challenge of Lario Racing, the Sun Red Seat Cupra, the V-line Mosler and the Ferrari 355 of Club Jarama RACE.

The second start brought again Marcos de Miguel Cristovao to the first position, but, unluckily, he was forced to retire after just a couple of laps. Michele Bartyan took the lead and immediately tried to leave back his rivals, which in that moment were the Drivex Porsche of Miguel Ángel de Castro, and the GPC Ferrari 430, with Marco Lambertini at the wheel. Behind them, the other Play team car of Manuel Giao and Ni Amorin started to gain places. With Giao at the wheel, the Ferrari 360 was extremely competitive on the Madrid track and achieved the third place before the changes of driver started.

There were many changes after that break. Alessandro Pier Guidi took the lead, and after him the Motor Competición Mosler achieved the second place, partly due to a contact between the Porsche of Ángel Burgueño (Drivex) and the Ferrari 430 of Gabriele Gardel (GPC), and also to the off-track of Ni Amorin with the second Play Team Ferrari.

Another Ferrari, the RSV Motorsport one, started gaining places and eventually landed with the third place.

In GTB, victory was again for the Rodrigo brothers with the Ferrari 430 Challenge. The Spanish duo dominated again from start to end, although at the end of the race the Gianni Giudici team tried to challenge their lead.
